Readers are Leaders!

Leaders are Readers!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are continuing a reading incentive program that we hope will encourage students to read regularly and consistently. This year’s independent reading program will reward students with a collection of wristbands, Eagle Bucks, Taco Bell coupons, and a place of honor on the reading wall outside of the cafeteria when they read at home throughout the school year.

Each student will have a reading log sent home weekly and be required to read at least 30 minutes a night.  Each 15 minutes of reading equals 1 line on the reading log, so 30 minutes of reading is equal to 2 lines on the reading log.  Your child will decide on a monthly reading goal with his/her teacher and will make a pledge to read every day. For every 100 lines  they turn into their teacher, they will receive additional wristbands to add to their collection along with the Crouse Cash and Chipotle coupons.  Please have your child log the title of the book read each night at home on their reading log.  Once your child logs their title, please initial the log. Some other ideas to help foster reading at home include:

  • Encourage your child to point to the words as he/she reads.
  • Ask your child to look closely at the pictures when reading to help work out what the words might be.

  • Ask your child to check for understanding as they read. This means stopping often and ask who is in the story and what has happened?

  • Enjoy reading to your child as well as listening to them read. You are an important role model for your child.

  • Make reading fun!

Thank you for your support in this school wide reading initiative!
